Dead Horse Bay is named for the bones that still wash up there, remnants from horse rendering plants on what was once Barren Island. From the 1850s through the 1920s, when horses were the cars clogging the streets of New York, their carcasses were used to manufacture glue and fertilizer, and the boiled bones were dumped in the bay. In 1926, the waters surrounding Barren Island were filled in with sand, coal and garbage to make Floyd Bennett Field, and in the 1950s, the cap on a twenty year old garbage dump burst, scattering the sand with eras of waste. Today the beach is littered with toys, vintage bottles, horse bones, and a slew of wacky trash from eras past.

Luckily, we’re into that kind of thing. Underwater New York is a project that seeks to inspire creative engagement with the landscape submerged beneath the waters surrounding New York City. Since our launch last October, more than forty artists, writers and musicians have contributed work inspired by our ever-growing list of underwater objects and phenomena. Dead Horse Bay is full of stuff just begging for stories - come explore the beach with us on Obscura Day, and see what our findings can inspire!

DETAILS AND DIRECTIONS

Meetup Time: 2 pm

Getting there by Public Transportation: Take the #2 Train to the last stop, Flatbush Avenue/Brooklyn College. Come upstairs and transfer to the Q35 Bus, which stops right in front of the Payless Shoe Store. (Note that other buses also stop there!) Tell the driver that you will be getting off at “the last stop before the bridge.”

Getting there by Car: Take the Belt Parkway or another route to Flatbush Avenue, heading out towards Rockaway. Just before the toll plaza for the Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge, make a left onto Aviation Road and you will come to the parking area.

Meet outside the Park Ranger's office near the Floyd Bennett Field parking lot on Aviation Road, just off Flatbush.
